We recommend the hotel. Spend our time here joyfully. A special mention to the front staff. A queen size bed was a bonus. For tea or coffee visit Kuma Cafe nearby.
The location was excellent; close proximity to all transportation and right downtown (walking distance to everything). The rooms were small but clean enough (carpet was stained, but beds seemed clean). Considering the price, the value is very good.
The shared showers were a little gross. I didn't want to go in without flip flops or touch anything. For stays longer than a couple nights I would invest in something with a private bathroom.
For a hostel it was very clean, very nice lobby, security guy at night. Bathrooms shared but plenty and more importantly clean. For this price and location all one needs is elementary cleanliness and a sense of security and the hotel/hostel delivered on both. I was very happy.
I think somehow it is possible to get your room cleaned, but I dint get how. Beggars tend to sit on the stairs and basically will beg for money/cigarettes every time you enter/exit. They were not threatening though, just annoying. No A/C (though you dont really need it in San Diego), just a fan. The room smelled slightly, but nothing serious.
Location, location, location. I took the train from Los Angeles and the hotel is about a block from the station. The Harbor is another block further (West) and the Gas lamp is a 10 minute walk the other direction. The room is very basic with a bed, desk and furniture type closet to put your clothes in. Wireless is free which is nice. The room was clean, total no frills, bath down the hall euro style lodging. Bathrooms weren't spotless, but good enough. Stay here if you are on a budget, want to be near everything and just need a place to sleep. The lobby had an adjacent outdoor patio and back area which I didn't get to spend time in.
Excellent location for events held at the various major hotels / conference center in downtown San Diego
This is the local YMCA hostel, except that you get your own room (but still shared bathrooms). As long as you know this in advance, it's not a problem.
Its price and downtown familiar location.
Worn-out carpets in the elevator - one not operational.
500 West reminds me of the youth hostels of the '60s. People of all ages, from every corner of the world stay there. It's a beautiful old building that has been saved by being converted from a former YMCA to what it is today. It's location for those of us that like to take Amtrak, planes or public transportation is ideal. It's staff work hard to make your stay pleasant. The restrooms (1/2 & 3/4 baths), though down the hall are clean and well appointed. Phones, free Wi-fi and now, TV's are available in each room. Where else in San Diego can you spend a couple of nights for less than $100, tax included? The adjoining restaurant is a great place too. Wonderful...
Keeping in mind what it is, what you pay, and the value you receive, as stated above, how can you complain? Well, OK, so the elevators are noisey, a little jerky and perhaps a little scarry... You have to trust your cape, somewhat. This is a facility for "travelers" not tourists.
Bed were very soft and good. Showers were good. It was good that there is a gymnastics downstairs. Place of a hotel is good - in the center, not far from conference center (San Diego Convention Center).
In rooms there was a little smell of cigarettes. There is was a house in front of my room windows, so I could not open much windows (otherwise they will see what I do in a room). I would like that downstair dinner place would be opened also after 1pm, for example, till 7pm.
Convenient location. Great value for the price.
The hotel has shared bathrooms but pretty clean and once you lock the door people cannot access it. Also you have to be really careful about parking. Street parking is free after 6pm but they do street cleaning 3 nights a week on one side of the street and 3 nights on the other side. You have to pay attention to the signs otherwise you will get a parking violation ticket.
We were mislead into thinking that this was actually a hotel. It is not! It is a hostel. This was a huge inconvenience, however, we stayed and did not allow this mistake to ruin our trip to San Diego. We only slept in the room; with most of our time spent enjoying Downtown San Diego.
hotel is superb, rooms are cheap compared to other hotels in San Diego downtown, and situated in a prime locality near to convention center, Amtrak, Airport and downtown. Cleaning services are regular and hotel has lot of amenities.
Restrooms are common and that is a great inconvenience. During morning peak hours, around 8 AM, we may have to wait to take bath.
The only reason I chose this hotel was that it had the best price of any place close to the airport.
I could not get access to the internet.
good room dimension
no cafemashine in the room
Good location, well located in between the city center and the pier. Very near to Gaslamp quarter and nightlife (about 10 minutes walking). Good location for the airport, too (12 dollars from the hotel to the airport by taxi). Public trasportation available: bus and train station are very near.
